Cafe Shalom is a weekly class and monthly Israeli Folk Dance party in San Francisco. All levels of dance experience are welcomed. Guidance happily provided for beginners.
Israeli folk dancers from all over the Bay Area dance the night away at Café Shalom’s Saturday party—a monthly tradition since the 1960s! We play a wonderful mix of oldies and the latest dances based on requests. Dancers of all ages are invited to join the fun on the second Saturday of every month. The first part of the evening – 30-45 minutes starts with slow and beginners dances, oldies, and dances which we learn in Tuesday class. Later we increase the intensity, up the beat and the pace and the evening is fully charged with great energy and fun.
Free parking available. Admission: $10

We are a recreational folk dance club catering to all levels of folk dancers, from beginners through advanced dancers.
As we joyfully resume in-person dancing, we will begin each evening with easier dances selected by the person doing the dance programming for that evening. After the first half hour of warm-up dances, we will follow an all-request format for the rest of the evening. We aim to be flexible and responsive to t he dancers, and we can pauseto provide teaching and review of a particular dance "on the fly", so don't be shy about joining us if you are new to folk dancing, and speak up if you want all or part of a dance reviewed. Later in the year we will resume our scheduled teaching and review of new dances.
"Dance Cards" that you punch each time you attend a class may be purchased in class on Sunday nights. The cost is $35 for five sessions, or $70 for ten sessions. If paying by check make the check out to "Davis International Folkdancers". You can opt to pay $7.00 per session, if you prefer. The punch cards will not expire, so you can come when it is convenient - no penalty if you miss a session.
For first time folk dancers only, your first visit is free.
COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS FOR NOW
N95 or equivalent masks must be worn and you must have had COVID-19 shots. Hand sanitizer will be available. Bring your own water bottle or a cup to fill in the kitchen. Please stay home if you have had symptoms or have been exposed. |

|
East Bay Folk Dancers mainly enjoy Balkan folk dances, but the repertoire extends as well to Israel, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Armenia, and Albania, with frequent forays beyond.
The dances played are entirely by request, so if you have dances you would like to do, just come with their names. The evening begins with simple dances that all can do, but includes intermediate and advanced dances later on. We are always ready to help newcomers pick out requests they might enjoy, and guide them in learning dances.
East Bay Folk Dancers is a dedicated and welcoming dance community with an unbroken history since meeting for dance on the lawn on the UC Berkeley campus in the early 1960s. East Bay Folk Dancers is organized as a collective without specific leaders.
The cost is $5, with your first night free.
Dancers are requested to wear N95 grade masks and for their first night they will need to show that they have been vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19.
At present there is no teaching, but it may start up again at some point. You might want to get on our weekly mailing list, which announces special upcoming events as well as the very occasional Friday that the Veterans Hall is not available to us. |

The Eszterlánc Hungarian Folk Ensemble is a performing folk dance group based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to promote and present traditional Hungarian folk dances and to preserve the Hungarian folk culture in all its forms.
The Eszterlánc Hungarian Folk Ensemble has been celebrating and showcasing Hungarian folk culture in the Bay Area since its foundation in 1977 through presentations to the Hungarian community and the general public.
The Ensemble consists of twenty to forty young adults ranging from age 14 and up. Most are of Hungarian heritage, although membership has never been limited to those with Hungarian backgrounds. The dancers receive their training in the Ensemble as well as from guest teachers and at workshops statewide.
Practices are held every week at the CY Dance Works, 25 37th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94403 on Friday nights from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Please e-mail us to make sure a practice is being held, as we occasionally skip a week. See the Contact Us page for a map!
Eszterlánc organizes dance houses (táncház) 2-3 times a year. These events showcase live music, dance teaching for kids and adults, free dance and singing.
We occasionally invite guest teachers and organize folk music workshops, dance short courses.
The (https://www.folkdance.com/community/where-to-dance/mazsola/) Mazsola Hungarian Children’s Folkdance Ensemble is affiliated with the Eszterlánc Hungarian Folk Ensemble.

Scottish country dancing, often abbreviated to SCD, is a form of social dance that involves couples in groups called sets. The couples typically stand facing each other in lines and trace progressive patterns that differ from dance to dance. The figures are repeated by each couple in turn. There are fast dances (hornpipes, jigs, and reels), and slow dances (strathspeys). The New York Branch offers classes on Thursday evenings at Metro Baptist Church, 410 West 40th in New York. |

We dance on a large, high-ceilinged social hall with a wood floor. The hall is heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer, and we also have a lot of fans to keep air circulating.
Attendance varies from 40-55 dancers; 60% women, 40% men. Average age about 50; age range from mid-20s to late-80s.
Very wide range of musical and dance tastes. About 60% is Eastern European/Middle Eastern, but that's sprinkled liberally with Contra dances, Scottish country dances, Country-Western line dances, Japanese, French Canadian, Russian, etc. Definitely no dance purists. 75% non-partner dances. Lots of easy dancers and mixers when beginning dancers are there. This group is very friendly, kind, and helpful to beginners. |
